Zinc and the immune system

Zinc is present in every cell of the body, and also it is a component of over 200 enzymes. In fact, zinc is involved in more enzymatic reactions than any other mineral in mammals.

Zinc is important for the skin, vision, smell, taste, reproduction, brain development, protein synthesis and wound healing. It is also one of the most important factors for a healthy immune system. Zinc is involved in almost every aspect of immunity, including immune-boosting "T" cells, which are essential for the immune response.

What can zinc deficiency be about?

Zinc levels in the body may be lowered by the following conditions :

     • diarrhea
     • fiber wear, which causes the gastrointestinal tract to release zinc
     • sweating
     • high calcium and iron intake
     • copper intake
     • liver or kidney disease and
     • diabetes
     • diabetes span>

How much zinc should be supplemented and when?

Children and adults need between 10 mg and 50 mg per day. Although the recommended value is 15 mg per day, it is generally considered that 30 to 50% of ingested zinc is not absorbed due to complexation with phytic acid, loss of sweat, fiber transport through the intestines, or due to competition for absorption with copper, iron and calcium.

Kirkman® contains 10 mg of zinc in all Super products Nu-Thera®. Due to the absorption problems mentioned above, many doctors recommend additional zinc supplementation at some point after dinner or before bed. By doing this during this time, there will be no fiber, calcium, iron or copper passing into the system to interfere with its use.
