Description
Vinpocetine is an alkaloid synthesized from vincamine, a natural compound obtained from the leaves of the periwinkle plant (Vinca minor L), which was first developed in Europe over 20 years ago. Vinpocetine is absorbed in the small intestine and then processed in the liver. In systemic circulation, vinpocetine is absorbed by body tissues and crosses the blood-brain barrier. Studies have shown that vinpocetine may provide protection to the nervous system through its antioxidant properties. In a double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial, 84 elderly people were treated with vinpocetine or placebo for 90 days. The results indicate that people supplementing vinpocetine experienced cognitive support. An additional randomized, double-blind, multicenter, placebo-controlled trial of 203 people also suggested that vinpocetine significantly supported cognitive function. Vinpocetine may support healthy memory, as indicated by a randomized, double-blind crossover study. ‡
