Action:

Inositol is present in all tissues of the human body, and its highest concentration is in the brain and heart. It is part of the outer lining of all body cells and contributes to the proper functioning of muscles and nerves. Inositol and some of its mono and polyphosphates are the basis for many molecules responsible for signal exchange (intercellular signaling) and molecules that are secondary information carriers. They are involved in many biological processes, such as:

- insulin signal conduction
- nerve conduction
- control of intracellular calcium concentration
- maintaining the potential of the cell membrane
- breakdown of fats and reducing cholesterol concentration in the blood
- gene expression (reading and transcribing genetic information into a product)
- formation of the cytoskeleton

Application:

It is believed that inositol deficiency may cause infertility (it is a component of sperm). It is used in psychiatric therapies (bulimia, panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, agoraphobia, depression) and in cases of increased stress (lowers blood pressure).
