Effect:
Homocysteine is an amino acid produced as a result of demethylation of methionine from consumed protein. Too high a level of homocysteine in the body is called hyperhomocysteinemia and can have very serious consequences.
The B vitamins contained in Homocysteine Factors are essential ingredients in the body's metabolic processes. They play an important role in energy production and support the proper functioning of blood cells, hormones and the nervous system. Together with metafolin (created as a result of the conversion of folic acid using the MTHFR enzyme), it is responsible for the conversion of homocysteine back to methionine. Vitamin B6 also participates in the processes that convert homocysteine into cysteine. Betaine supports these reactions.
Application:
Too high levels of homocysteine in the body (hyperhomocysteinemia) may lead to:
- atherosclerotic lesions
- myocardial infarction
- stroke
- thrombotic lesions
Disorders in homocysteine metabolism may be caused by, among others: by:
- genetic diseases
- improper diet (poor in vitamins B6 and B12 and metafolin)
- drugs (neurotic, oncological, containing theophylline - vitamin B6 antagonist)
- diseases (chronic renal failure, leukemia lymphoblastic disease, ovarian or breast cancer, thyroid failure, psoriasis, organ transplant)
- smoking and alcohol abuse
